10 General rules for Pruning Apple Trees

  1. Prune apple trees at planting time to balance the tops with the roots. Cut about 12 inches above the height, where you want the lowest branch.
  2. Train young trees in the first few years after planting to avoid massive pruning later.
  3. Prune young trees lightly.
  4. Prune mature trees more heavily.
  5. Prune the top portion heavily than the lower portion.
  6. Remove broken or diseased branch.
  7. Shorten any branches that are too long.
  8. The best time to prune is early spring  just prior to the beginning of the active growth or early spring.
  9. In controlling mature tree size, it is needed to supply of enough nitrogen. Excessive nitrogen supply can result excessive growth.
  10. When Removing large limbs, first cut part way on the underside, then cut flush with the main limb. Do not leave stubs.
